While browsing your BombBomb account, you may have noticed a contact list named "suppression list" in your Contacts tab. What is the suppression list and why is it important?
What this video to learn, or keep reading below.
Overview of the Suppression List
- The suppression list is an essential feature of our video email service that tracks email addresses to which no further emails should be sent.
- When sending a new email to your lists, BombBomb ensures that contacts on the suppression list do not receive that email.
Components of the Suppression List
Your suppression list includes various types of contacts, each labeled for clarity:
-
Suppressed: Indicates that a list of contacts has been uploaded to the suppression list.
-
Suppressed – Manually: Refers to a contact added to the suppression list manually through the contact details screen.
-
Invalid Address Suppressed – Hard Bounced: These addresses were rejected by the recipient's mail server for various reasons.
-
Reported Abuse Suppressed – Abuse Complaint: Contacts reported your email as spam and have been removed from your mailing list.
-
Suppressed – User Global Opt Out: Contacts who have opted out of all your email lists and campaigns.
Importance of the Suppression List
- The suppression list safeguards both your reputation and BombBomb’s. Sending emails to recipients who cannot or do not wish to receive them can harm both parties.
- Note: Contacts on the suppression list do not count against your total contacts or your subscription level.
Best Practices
- Do not delete your suppression list or remove users from it. Deleting users may lead to unintended future emails, damaging both your and BombBomb's reputation.
Accessing the Suppression List
- Navigate to the Contacts tab.
- Click on "Suppression List" in the left panel.
Viewing and Managing Contacts
- In the suppression list, you can see each suppressed contact along with the reason for suppression.
Exporting the Suppression List
-
To export your suppression list:
- Click the Gear icon next to "Suppression List."
- Select "Export."
Importing Contacts to the Suppression List
-
To add contacts to your suppression list:
- Click the "Add People" button on your Suppression List page.
- Upload a .csv file just as you normally would.
Unsuppressing a Contact
-
To unsuppress a contact:
- Hover over the contact, and "unsuppress" will appear on the right.
- Only unsuppress users if they have specifically requested to continue receiving emails from you.
By effectively managing your suppression list, you can maintain compliance and protect your reputation in email marketing.

how do I delete contacts from the suppressed list??
Hi Tom,
Thank you for your comment! Please do not delete anyone who is in your suppression list. This list consists of your previous bounces and unsubscribes, and these are not contacts you want to send to anyway. If you accidentally end up sending to these people, it will hurt your sending reputation, and your account may be compromised as a result.
The contacts on your suppression list do not count towards your overall plan and need to remain suppressed in order to protect your sending reputation and prevent you front sending to them again. Keeping them there also allows you to maintain the history on each of those contacts, so I would highly advise against deletion.
I hope this information helps. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!
I would need this for another software not in bomb bom that I need ot upload a clean list to
Hi Lea,
Thanks for your comment!
I understand you've already worked with someone from our Customer Care team on your issue with our suppression list.
Since we are a permission-based email platform, it is our job to help our users avoid sending to people they shouldn't. This protects customers' email reputation, which is very important in email marketing. If you utilize any program or CRM that does not include an option to have a suppression list, you are risking ruining your email reputation and, subsequently, being blacklisted.
I hope this clarifies any confusion you may have. Our Customer Care team will continue to work with you so you can fully understand the suppression list and how to send emails in a healthy way!
How do I un-suppress a contact? I have a particular contact in my bombbomb account who is now an Agent with my Agency and they need to receive emails from me regarding important inter-company information. Is this able to be done, and if so how?
I have someone on my suppression list due to an invalid email. How do I get them off the suppression list once I have updated their email?
Hi Geoffrey and Central Region!
Thank you for your questions. In order to unsuppress a contact, you will need to physically select the "Suppression List" in your Contacts tab.
Once you have, you can search for the contact, hover over the email, and you will see an unsuppress link show up on the right side of the contact email.
You can do this on a one to one basis, but not on a mass scale.
If you have any issues doing this, please feel free to email us at support@bombbomb.com.
Thank you!
Why would a new email address automatically sent to the suppression list?
An email address was entered and it came up with a pop-up message that “this contact has been added to the suppression list”?
Hi Derieck!
Thank you for your question. The two most common reasons this might have happened are:
1. That contact was already in your database as a suppressed contact, or
2. You may have been in the suppression list when you went to add that person into your database.
If you believe this was done by mistake, you can unsuppress the contact by going to your Suppression list, searching for that contact, and hovering over their email address which will produce an "Unsuppress" link to the right hand side of the email address.
Thank you!
Hello,
From looking at my list. I only see contacts with Invalid Address Suppressed - Hard Bounced, Reported Abuse Suppressed and Suppressed.
Will I see weather or not an email was Suppressed – Manually?
Thank you :)
Hi Greg and Kim!
Great question. If a contact was suppressed manually, that contact will only say "Suppressed - Manually" from the Suppression list.
If viewed from All Contacts or a particular list, it will say "Suppressed."
I hope this helps, but if you have further questions let me know!
What about RE-INSTALLING an email address for someone who wants to OPT BACK IN?
We do various promotions - give-aways and such - and we promote BOTH in print AND email. Right now we're promoting our Thanksgiving Pie "Contest" (everyone who enters WINS) and people MUST register to win via email.
Some past clients, who apparently opted out of our emails at one point, WANT to "enter" our contest. The only way I can do this is to ADD their email BACK onto our mailing list.
So... how does THAT happen?
Hi John and Angela!
If you find there is a situation that you need to unsuppress a contact, you can do so by going to the Suppression List, hover over the email address you need to unsuppress, and you will see a link on the far right that says "Unsuppress."
Keep in mind that this can only be done on a one to one basis, and you cannot mass unsuppress contacts.
If you have any further questions about your suppression list or this process, let us know. We are happy to help.
Does it hurt our list if the suppressed contacts continue to live on there but we're not actually emailing to them?
Hi Laurie, great question! It is actually beneficial to your sending reputation to leave those contacts in the suppression list. Keeping these contacts in your suppression list also allows us to maintain the history on each of those contacts, so there is no possibility of accidentally sending to them.
If you continue sending to contacts that have bounced or unsubscribed, your reputation with email providers can be harmed which can decrease the deliverability of your mail. The suppression list ensures this does not happen!
Keep in mind that these contacts do not count toward your overall contact limit.
If you would like to discuss your suppression list and reputation more, send us an email at support@bombbomb.com !
