When you send a video, BombBomb takes the first three seconds of your video and creates a GIF thumbnail that's played on a loop inside your email. Compared to a static play button, this animation has been shown to result in a 50% higher engagement rate!
But what if your GIF thumbnail doesn't look quite right? What if you have a brand image you'd prefer to use, or there's a frame in your video you'd like to have as your thumbnail instead? Well, BombBomb gives you the option to change your video thumbnail, and it's super easy to do.
Watch this video or keep reading below to learn how.
To change the thumbnail of your BombBomb video, follow these steps:
1. Access the Video Workspace
- Log in to Your Account: Start by logging into your BombBomb account.
- Navigate to the Videos Tab: Click on the Videos tab to access your video library.
- Select the Video: Locate the video you wish to edit and click the Pencil/Edit Video button next to it.
2. Edit the Thumbnail
- Expand Thumbnail Options: In the edit video screen, click the drop-down arrow to reveal the thumbnail options.
2.1 Choose Thumbnail Type
- Animated Thumbnail: This option creates a GIF thumbnail from the first 3 seconds of your video.
- Static Thumbnail: Select this option to upload an image from your device or capture a new photo.
3. Uploading a New Thumbnail
3.1 Replace the GIF Thumbnail
- Select the "Static" Option: Choose this option to upload your new thumbnail.
- Click "Upload": This allows you to select an image from your device.
- Choose "Take Photo": Alternatively, you can capture a new image directly.
Note: The maximum size of the image you can upload is 20MB. In addition, it must always be in JPG format. If your image isn't a JPG, search for a JPG converter online to convert your image.
3.2 Finalize the Upload
- After selecting your file, click Open to upload it. Your new static thumbnail will be saved automatically.
4. Using a Screenshot from Your Video
Pro Tip: If you'd like to use an image from your video, play the video, pause at your desired frame, take a screenshot, and upload that image when replacing your animated preview.
5. Reverting to the Original Thumbnail
- To return to the original GIF thumbnail, simply select the Animated option again. This action will replace the static thumbnail for all recipients, both past and present.
By following these steps, you can effectively update the thumbnail for your BombBomb videos, enhancing their engagement and visual appeal.

How do I change it so that the 3 second animated preview is not the first 3 seconds?
Hi Tom!
Thank you for your question. At this time, the animated preview can only be taken from the first 3 seconds of the video. I would, however, be happy to submit a feature request for you!
If you have further questions, please feel free to email us at support@bombbomb.com.
