Understanding Anonymous Video Views

Overview

When someone watches your BombBomb video but can't be identified, their engagement appears as "Someone" in your tracking data. This article explains why that happens and what it means for your tracking.

Why You See "Someone"

BombBomb identifies viewers using targeted URLs — unique links tied to a specific recipient. When a view comes in through a targeted URL, BombBomb can associate it with that person by email address.

When a view comes in without a targeted URL — or when the tracking information can't be read — BombBomb has no way to identify the viewer, so the engagement is recorded as "Someone."

Common Reasons a View Shows as "Someone"

  • The video link was shared outside of a tracked send — for example, posted in a text message, Slack, LinkedIn, or another social platform.
  • The original recipient forwarded the email to someone else, and that person watched the video.
  • The viewer's browser or email client blocked the tracking cookie.
  • The video was accessed directly from a copied link rather than through a targeted email.

What "Someone" Can Still Do

Even when BombBomb can't identify a viewer, they can still interact with your video landing page. Likes and comments from unidentified viewers will appear in your tracking data — they just won't include a name or any identifying information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a "Someone" view still count toward my total view count? Yes. All views are counted regardless of whether the viewer can be identified.

Can I find out who "Someone" is? No. If BombBomb doesn't have a targeted URL to associate with the view, there's no way to determine the viewer's identity.

How do I reduce "Someone" views? Send your videos through methods that generate targeted URLs — the Outlook integration, Gmail via the Chrome or Edge Extension, Outreach, Zendesk, or Automated Workflows. Avoid posting video links publicly or sharing them in group channels where individual viewers can't be tracked.
