Before You Start

Make sure the BombBomb Screen Recorder is installed.
The screen recorder is a separate app that needs to be installed on your computer before you can use it. If you haven't set it up yet, click Record Screen in the BombBomb video recorder and follow the installation prompt. See Troubleshooting Screen Recorder Issues if you run into problems.

Have a stable internet connection.
A wired Ethernet connection is more reliable than Wi-Fi for both recording and uploading. If you're on Wi-Fi, avoid streaming or large downloads while recording.

Plug in your laptop.
If you're on a laptop, plug it in before recording. When running on battery, your machine may throttle performance to preserve power, which can affect recording quality.

Choosing What to Record

When you click Record Screen, you'll be prompted to choose:

  • Entire Screen — best for full walkthroughs or tutorials that span multiple apps
  • Window — best when you're demonstrating a single application and want to keep the recording focused

Tip: Whatever you're recording, make sure the app or window is maximized so it fills the frame and is easy for viewers to follow.

Setting Up for a Great Recording

Keep your font sizes large.
Text that looks fine on your screen can be hard to read during playback, especially on smaller screens. Increase your font size or zoom level before recording so viewers can follow along comfortably.

Clean up your desktop.
Close personal windows, files, or anything you don't want viewers to see. A focused, clutter-free screen keeps attention on your content.

Enable Do Not Disturb.
Mute notifications before you start to avoid interruptions mid-recording.

Close apps you don't need.
If your machine is older or running slowly, closing unused apps and browser tabs before recording can help prevent lag. This is especially important if you're running video conferencing or other screen-sharing tools in the background.

Starting Your Recording

Start on camera, then switch to your screen.
Begin your recording with your camera in full screen — greet your viewer and briefly explain what you're about to show them. Then switch to the screen share. This creates a more engaging animated thumbnail that captures attention and gives your message a personal touch before diving into the content.

For long recordings, record in parts.
If your walkthrough is longer than 10 minutes, consider breaking it into separate recordings. This reduces the risk of losing everything if your connection drops or you make a mistake, and it makes it easier for viewers to navigate your content.

Audio

For tips on getting the best audio quality — including microphone recommendations and reducing background noise — see Tips for Better Video Recordings. Everything in that article applies to screen recordings too.

Before You Send

Do a test recording first.
Record 30 seconds to confirm your audio is coming through clearly, the right screen or window is being captured, and everything looks the way you expect.

Review before sending.
Watch your recording back before sharing it. Check for technical issues, background distractions, or anything you'd want to re-record. It's easy to record again and get it right.
