Overview
If BombBomb can't access your camera or microphone, recording won't work. This is almost always a permissions issue — either in your browser or in your operating system settings. Work through the steps below in order until recording works.
Who this applies to: All users Plan requirement: Core, Core + Copilot, Enterprise
Before You Start
- Use Google Chrome (recommended). Other browsers may have limited support.
- Make sure no other application or browser tab is currently using your camera. Only one application can access your camera at a time. If Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, or any other tab has the camera active, BombBomb's recorder will fail. Close those before proceeding.
Step 1: Allow Camera and Microphone Access in Chrome (Site Level)
This is the most common fix. Chrome controls camera and microphone access per site — make sure BombBomb is allowed.
- Go to https://app.bombbomb.com/workspace/video/new in Chrome. Opening the recorder page is what triggers the camera/microphone permission prompt.
- Click the View Site Information icon (🔒 or ⓘ) to the left of the URL in the address bar.
- In the dropdown, find Camera and Microphone.
- Set both to Always Allow.
- Close the dropdown.
- Refresh the page (
Ctrl + Ron Windows /Cmd + Ron Mac). - Test by attempting to start a new recording.
Step 2: Check Camera and Microphone Settings in Chrome Settings
If Step 1 didn't resolve the issue, check your Chrome-level device and permissions settings.
- Open Chrome and click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- In the left sidebar, click Privacy and security, then click Site settings.
-
Click Camera. Select your preferred camera device from the dropdown at the top. Then scroll down to Allowed to use your camera and confirm you see either:
-
https://app.bombbomb.com:443(for web app recording), or - BombBomb Video - Webcam & Screen Recorder (for Chrome Extension recording)
If BombBomb appears under Blocked, click it and change the setting to Allow.
-
- Go back to Site settings and click Microphone. Select your preferred microphone device. Check the Allowed list the same way — confirm BombBomb is listed and not blocked.
- Close Settings, return to your BombBomb tab, and refresh the page.
Step 3: Update Camera and Microphone Permissions on Mac (macOS)
If Chrome has permission but recording still fails, macOS itself may be blocking access.
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner and select System Settings.
- In the sidebar, scroll down and click Privacy & Security.
- Click Camera. Toggle Google Chrome and BombBomb Screen Recorder to On.
- Go back and click Microphone. Toggle Google Chrome to On.
- Go back and click Screen & System Audio Recording. Toggle Google Chrome and BombBomb Screen Recorder to On.
- Restart Chrome for the changes to take effect, then test your recording.
Step 4: Update Camera and Microphone Permissions on Windows
- Open Settings.
- Navigate to camera privacy settings:
- Windows 10: Go to Privacy > Camera
- Windows 11: Go to Privacy & security > Camera
- Make sure Camera access is toggled On.
- Make sure Allow apps to access your camera is toggled On.
- Under Choose which apps can access your camera, confirm Google Chrome is toggled On.
- Restart Chrome and test your recording.
Frequently Asked Questions
I've gone through all the steps and still can't record — what now? Restart your browser and your computer, then try again. If the issue persists, confirm your camera is physically connected and not covered or disabled.
Can I use an external webcam? Yes. Make sure it's selected as the active device in both your Chrome Settings (Step 2 above) and in BombBomb's recording screen when you start a new video.
My recording worked before — why did it suddenly stop? The most common cause is another application or browser tab taking over the camera. Close any app using your camera (Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, other browser tabs) and refresh BombBomb. macOS and Windows updates can also reset app permissions, so it's worth re-checking Steps 3 or 4 after an OS update.
I'm on the Chrome Extension — do these steps still apply? Yes, with one difference: in Step 2, look for BombBomb Video - Webcam & Screen Recorder in the Allowed list instead of https://app.bombbomb.com:443.
