Troubleshooting Chrome Extension Issues

Overview

If the BombBomb Chrome Extension isn't recording, loading, or behaving as expected, this article walks you through how to fix the most common issues. Most problems are caused by a stale installation, a denied camera or microphone permission, or a conflicting extension.

Who this applies to: All users
Plan requirement: Core, Core + Copilot, Enterprise

On a corporate or IT-managed device? Your IT team may control Chrome and extension updates — meaning you might not be able to update Chrome or reinstall extensions without their approval. If you're unable to complete any of the steps below, check with your IT team first.

Step 1: Make Sure Chrome Is Up to Date

An outdated version of Chrome can cause the extension to malfunction. BombBomb is optimized for the latest version of Chrome.

  1. Open Chrome and click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click About Google Chrome in the left sidebar.
  4. Chrome will automatically check for updates and install them if available.
  5. Click Relaunch to apply the update.

Step 2: Check Camera and Microphone Permissions

If the extension launches but you can't record, Chrome may have blocked camera or microphone access.

When you open the BombBomb recorder in the extension for the first time, Chrome will prompt you to allow access to your camera and microphone. If you clicked Never allow at that prompt, the recorder won't work.

To fix this:

  1. Click the lock icon (or the camera/microphone icon) in Chrome's address bar while on the page where you're using the extension.
  2. Find Camera and Microphone in the permissions list.
  3. Change both from Blocked to Allow.
  4. Refresh the page and try again.

Alternatively:

  1. Click the three-dot menu > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings.
  2. Under Permissions, click Camera and then Microphone.
  3. Find BombBomb in the blocked list and change the setting to Allow.

Step 3: Clear Your Browser Cache

Cached data can interfere with extension performance and cause blank screens or loading issues.

  1. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of Chrome.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Privacy and security.
  4. Click Delete browsing data.
  5. Set Time range to All time.
  6. Check Browsing history, Cookies and other site data, and Cached images and files.
  7. Click Delete data and wait for Chrome to finish.

After clearing cache, reopen Chrome and test the extension again.

Note: You may be signed out of some websites after clearing cookies. You'll need to sign back into BombBomb through the extension.

Step 4: Disable Conflicting Extensions

Ad blockers, privacy shields, and other video-related extensions can interfere with BombBomb. Temporarily disable other extensions to see if one of them is causing the problem.

  1. Click the three-dot menu > hover over Extensions > click Manage Extensions.
  2. Toggle off other extensions one at a time, testing BombBomb after each one.
  3. If disabling a specific extension fixes the problem, leave it off while using BombBomb or check its settings for an option to whitelist BombBomb.Ensure you're signed in to the correct BombBomb account

Multiple accounts or incorrect logins can cause confusion.

  • Open Google Chrome on your computer.

  • Click your profile icon in the top-right corner of the browser window.

  • Look for a Syncing to message under your profile name.

    • If syncing is active, your profile is logged in and verified.

  • If you see Turn on sync..., click it.

  • Sign in with your Google account credentials if prompted.

  • Click Yes, I'm in to enable sync across your devices.

  • Confirm your profile picture and email are correct after syncing is enabled.

  • Optional: If multiple profiles exist, ensure you're using the correct one by clicking Manage Profiles and selecting the right account.

Step 5: Reinstall the BombBomb Extension

A corrupted installation can cause persistent issues. Reinstalling also ensures you have the latest version of the extension.

Remove the existing extension:

  1. Go to the BombBomb Video - Webcam & Screen Recorder page in the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click Remove from Chrome.
  3. Confirm removal.

Reinstall from the Chrome Web Store:

  1. On the same Chrome Web Store page, click Add to Chrome.
  2. Click Add Extension in the confirmation popup.

Pin the extension (recommended):

  1. Click the puzzle piece icon in the Chrome toolbar.
  2. Find BombBomb and click the pin icon to keep it visible in your toolbar.

Sign back in:

  1. Click the BombBomb icon in your toolbar.
  2. Click Log In and enter your BombBomb credentials.

Note: After reinstalling you'll need to sign in again. Make sure you're logging in with the email address associated with your BombBomb account — not a Google account or a different email.

Step 6: Try the Edge Extension Instead

If you're still having issues with Chrome, BombBomb also offers an extension for Microsoft Edge that works the same way. Switching to Edge can be a quick way to unblock yourself while you troubleshoot Chrome.

You can find setup instructions in the How to Connect Edge article.

Frequently Asked Questions

I don't see the BombBomb icon in my Chrome toolbar. What do I do?
Click the puzzle piece icon in the toolbar to open your extensions list, then click the pin icon next to BombBomb to make it permanently visible.

The extension opens a blank screen.
This is almost always caused by cached data or a stale install. Clear your browser cache (Step 3) first. If that doesn't fix it, reinstall the extension (Step 5).

The extension says my camera or microphone is unavailable.
Chrome has blocked access. Follow the steps in Step 2 to reset your camera and microphone permissions.

I reinstalled the extension but it's still not working. Could it be my IT environment?
Yes — if you're on a corporate or managed device, your IT team may need to approve the extension or its updates. Share this article with your IT team and ask them to whitelist the extension and ensure Chrome is on the latest version.

I'm logged into Chrome with the wrong Google profile. Does that affect the extension?
Chrome profiles don't affect which BombBomb account you're logged into — those are separate. When you open the extension, make sure you're signing into BombBomb with the correct email address for your account.
